Recently, I went on a search for a killer set of pearl earrings. My daughter celebrates her birth in June, which has as its birthstone the pearl. With fresh piercing in her ears, she solemnly informed me that she was old enough now for her very own pearl earrings.
I was game, but I didnt want just any old pearl earrings for my daughter. No, she deserved something unique and special, and what better way to celebrate her individuality than by copying a unique celebrity? In my search for something special, I had stumbled upon a jewelry collection dedicated to creating reproductions of jewelry worn in classic films.
Reproduction Jewelry
I found a stunning pair of drop pearl earrings worn by Marilyn Monroe in the film The Love Nest. The earrings were gorgeous, but the movie wasnt one of her better known ones, so I ultimately decided this was not good enough for my baby.
I found a beautiful pearl bracelet with an art deco clasp worn by Deborah Kerr in An Affair To Remember. The movie was famous enough to suit me, but there was no matching set of pearl earrings, so no luck there.
Marlene Dietrich had a smoky grey pearl ring in the movie Alaska Gold Mine. Now this was unique, and Marlene is one of my favorite Golden Age actresses. I put this one down as a maybe. Maybe I could get away with a ring instead of a set of pearl earrings.
It turns out big Hollywood stars in big Hollywood movies have a tendency to wear flashy diamonds, rubies, and emeralds more often than they wear pearls. So my choices were few in the copycat area.
Make Your Own Memories
Just then my eye fell on a drawing my daughter had done that morning. It was a picture of herself at the birthday party she would be having the following week. Under a giant rainbow, she was opening a present in front of her friends. You couldnt see what was in the box, but a giant word bubble was drawn over her head, and she was saying Oh Mama, I love my pearl earrings!
In the end I realized that what made all the jewelry reproductions I had been looking at special was the feeling they evoked in me when remembering the movies, or remembering my own feelings at the time I saw the movies. I could give my daughter any beautiful pearl earrings and she and I would make them special ourselves, because she and I are special to each other without any help from Hollywood.
